Here are the pictures of the Surefire 9Z weapon light mounted on my Bushmaster M4 carbine and the Interstate batteries that cooked off. We were four miles outside Ski Beech, NC when we heard a large explosion, ringing in the ears, and a fire at the rear of our three children’s car seats. From what I can figure the CR123 batteries leaked and the pressure switch mounted to the weapon may have been bumped. The end result was five people in a ditch extracting three children from car seats while attempting to salvage the vehicle, and uh maybe a weapon or two, OK, maybe four. Did I mention zero visibility due to a snow storm and 19 degree weather? All kids are alive and unhurt, the wife’s Armada has minor burns, and happy to say all Sig Sauer, HK, and Bushmaster M4 are well and warm. Think when you travel with lithium batteries. A line from Black Hawk down after a Ranger from 3/75 was hit by an RPG, the Delta Operative said “are you OK” the Ranger responded with “I can hear bells ringing”, the explosion brought back memories of fond days gone by.
